Caving in Attica (Panos Cave)
Activity Description
Caves in Attica !! Her well-hidden secrets !!!
Attica, although inextricably linked to Athens, continues to be a place of exquisite natural beauty, many of which are unknown to the general public, even the locals.
One of the least known natural beauties of Attica is its caves. And this is rather expected as, unfortunately, most of them are not accessible to the general public.
CAVE PANOS
Large cave above the gorge of Goura, in Parnitha. In ancient times, the god Pan (and probably both Asclepius and the Nymphs) was worshiped in this cave. To the right of the entrance there are carved paintings on the rock for the placement of tributes. Here was found an inscription that testified to the ancient name of the ravine (Keladon) and the god that was worshiped (Pan)>
The news leads to a large uphill room, while from an elevated passage we are led to a second room, where there is a large stone basin. The floor of the first room is largely covered by petrified goors, which have formed large lithometic basins in the center of the cave. In one of them, I. Petrochilos found in 1952 many Niphargus (blind aquatic amphibians).
The cave is also called LYCHNOSPILIA due to a large number of lamps (about 2,000) found, along with many other objects, copper coins and medical tools.
