Activity Description

What better way to spend your day rather than taking an exciting getaway from Athens city center and exploring one of Attica’s best wineries? Join us on a daily wine tour and let us guide you through the entire process of wine production and give you a good insight into the 4.000 years of history of winemaking in Greece!

According to the mythology, Dionysus, the god of wine and mirth, entrusted Attica’s residents with the secrets of viticulture and the art of wine drinking-thousands of years ago. Mesogaia region is blessed with a mild climate, year-round sunshine, and rich soil, surrounded both by high mountains and the sea, all of which contribute to a great variety of quality wines, equivalent to their internationally acclaimed counterparts. Let’s not forget that Attica is one of the oldest wine–producing regions in the world!

You will have the chance to taste some well–known Greek varieties, such as Savvatiano – produced only in the Attica region – Assyrtiko, Malagouzia, Agiorgitiko, and Athiri, as well as international varieties such as Cabernet, Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Learn straight from the local wine producers the secrets of each variety, walk through the beautiful vineyards, and take back home some delightful Greek wines, right from their source!

Schedule:

This half–day tour will take you on an exploration of Attica’s ancient history and vineyards!

After you enjoy your breakfast, we will pick you up from your hotel at about 9:30 am and we will drive towards Vavrona (approx. 45’-50’), on the eastern coast of Attica. There, we will visit the less–known, yet significant archaeological site of Vravrona, set in an idyllic landscape, surrounded by lush green fields, olive trees, and vineyards, near the Aegean coastline. Inhabited since the Neolithic area, the site is dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of vegetation and hunting, but also as the protector of women in childbirth and of infants. The most notable monuments to visit on site are the Temple of Artemis, built in the late 6th century BC, the Π-shaped Doric stoa, the stone bridge over the Erasinos river, and the archaeological museum which exhibits findings from throughout the region of Mesogaia dating from the prehistoric (early Copper) period to the Roman era.

Afterward, we will head to a prestigious Attica winery, the first in Greece especially designed and built according to innovative bioclimatic standards. There, depending on the season and the weather, we will have the chance to walk through the vineyards and take a look at the different grape varieties cultivated. Then, we will take a tour of the winery, where you will find out more about the wine-making process, followed by tastings of 3 – 5 different signature wines, accompanied by bread rusks, Greek olives, and gruyere cheese. You can also shop for your preferred wines directly from the winery.

You can optionally have lunch in a nearby coastal tavern in Porto Rafti or return back to your hotel in Athens.

Plus: combine your wine experience with a visit to the Ancient temple of Artemis and the Archaeological Museum of Vravrona!
