Hiking Drosato-Matzioureika, Agrafa
Activity Description
In this excursion, we will come in contact with the cultural, religious, and nature-loving elements combined with the traditional cuisine of the area. Dense vegetation, towering peaks, ravines, and rivers define the area of Argithea.
The cultural reserve of the area is rich and consists of prehistoric and classical antiquities, churches, and remarkable monastic complexes of Byzantine and post-Byzantine times as well as stone-built remnants of modern times (period of Ottoman rule) such as houses, watermills, boulders, and bridges. The first stop is in the gorge of Tyrologos, where the stone-arched bridge of Mezilos (designated protected monument) is located.
Then we visit Drosato (former Mezilo), a historic village built at an altitude of 960m. on the slope of Karava. Here we will see stone houses that preserve the traditional architecture and the school that operated in 1929 and was used by the guerrillas during the Second World War to hold prisoners. Today is a museum with wooden objects used by the locals in their agricultural work and way of life.
Then we will walk to the northern part of the village, where we find the remains of the hydroelectric plant, which made the village unique with electricity in 1952. Then we descend south of the village, pass the 180-year-old stone watermill (remains) and visit the Monastery of Agios Athanasios, a hagiographer from the 17th century.
From there we will take the path that leads to the springs of the village that form an impressive waterfall. Here we will have a picnic and whoever wants can take a bath in its refreshing waters. We turn and descend the gorge. The view is impressive. High up we see firs, beeches, cedars, and holly trees while reaching the river low aquatic vegetation with plane trees and poplars, we will find vathres there. We cross the river and ascend to Matziureika, where we will enjoy Greek flavors, traditional pies, and grilled genuine local meats of the area. The balcony of the shop where we will enjoy our coffee, dessert, or lunch overlooks the mountains Kourliaka and Karava, the village Drosato, and the waterfall that is visible to the naked eye.
