One of the least known natural beauties of Attica is its caves. And this is rather expected as, unfortunately, most of them are not accessible to the general public.
KOUTOUKI CAVE
Koutouki Cave is the largest cave in the prefecture of Attica and one of the richest in decoration. It was unknown to humans because it was hermetically sealed for millions of years. A crack in the rock on the roof of the cave, caused by tectonic causes, opened the first passage to the light and at the same time created the opportunity to discover it: in 1926 a sheep falls inside, standing lucky and surviving. His arrow catches the attention of the shepherd, who brings a well to take out the sheep. The news of the discovery of a large cave with amazing decoration spread and was first explored, two years later by journalist D. Hatzopoulos. The systematic exploration and mapping were done in 1954 by the couple Petrochilou.
The cave consists of a unique but large room, measuring 60x60m. Stone curtains, columns and seabeds create multiple vertical and horizontal spaces with a wide variety of formations and colors.
