Hiking on the paths of Parnonas, Platanos - Sitaina - Kastanitsa
Activity Description
The route starts from the amphitheatrically built Platanos heading to Sitaina surrounded by pine trees.
Leaving the village of Platanos behind, the visitors are full of the images of stone houses, cobbled narrow streets, and running waters, as well as the co-existence of the variation of intense vegetation (chestnut, plane, pine, spruce, pear, apple trees) which is favored by the special climate.
Going to Sitaina, the scents of aromatic herbs and plants accompany the visitors.
In Sitaina, a green ravine splits the village into two parts, forming the Loulouga Gorge. The forest of pine and spruce trees which is around the village has been announced as a natural monument. Large clearings allow visitors to admire the view and the morphology of the area, as the gorges of Spilakia, Loulouga, and Koutoupou are joined forming the Vrasiati river.
The path goes on up to Kastanitsa, one of the most beautiful traditional settlements of Peloponnese.
The village at an altitude of 840m surrounded by a chestnut forest, has been declared as a protected area. Tsakonian architecture is distinguished as the stone houses are covered with roofs of schist tiles. Arched doors, white-painted cobbled streets, and the Byzantine castle (14th century) at the top of the village make the landscape unique.
Guest houses, coffee shops, and taverns offer several, local delicious dishes in the center of the village.
